The weather looks good for today so come on down to the market for some cheap art books. Lots of new stuff on the stall this week as I've got myself a snazzy new trailer so I can carry more. There'll also be more books in the free box plus some other gear to surprise you.
As an incentive, the first person to say the following will be able to choose two free art auction catalogues of his/her choice:
"The power of imagination makes us infinite." - John Muir
It's as easy as that. See you soon, haere ra, Andrew.
P.S. I can't believe the Aussies capitulated to what is a fairly mediocre England XI. Perhaps the Series needs to be downgraded from five Tests to three or four in future and New Zealand to receive more than the paltry two we currently get.

Declare your independence today by deciding to come down to the market without seeking the approval of your mates. Today is your day, and I've loads of new stuff on the stall just for you.
As an incentive, the first person to say the following will be able to pick two art auction catalogues for free of his/her choice:
'It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.
The writings of Henry David Thoreau including Walden are well worth a look. See you soon, haere ra, Andrew
P.S. It's hot and dry at the moment so go fill up your watering can and go water some of the street trees. The council wont do it. Already there are dead and dying trees everywhere. Think of the the monetary value of the plants that we are losing and how simple it is to save them.

Bookstall is on today June 27th
Well, the forecast looks like being a cracker today, you're not at Glasto, so get yourselves down to the market. As well as the goodies on my stall the market now has a cycle repair shop and the barbers has expanded to include a bar as well. Have a pint from the brewing supplies shop and peruse the books on my stall. Come to the park for books on art.
As an incentive, the first person to say the following will be able to pick two free art auction catalogues of his/her choice:
"Joys come from simple and natural things: mists over meadows, sunlight on leaves, the path of the moon over water."
Not sure which Sigurd Olson book this quote appears in, but if you get a chance to read Runes of the North I recommend it.
Don't disappoint me! Haere ra, Andrew.

Well, the weather might be a bit dodgy in the early afternoon, so it would be best to arrive early to the stall today. Lots of goodies to have a look at. As an incentive to come out, the first person to say the following will be able to pick two free art auction catalogues of his/her choice:
"Hoarders just need bigger houses with a concrete floor."
See you soon, haere ra, Andrew.

Summer has finally arrived so you have no excuse for not coming down to the stall today. Lots of new stuff this week and I should have a box of records including Bluenote albums and others on 180g vinyl such as The Doors and Brian Wilson.
As an incentive the first person to say the following will be able to choose two art auction catalogues of his/her choice:
"Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment."
I think Buddha would look upon me as a lost cause - I've just got too much attachment to my stuff. Even things that I haven't looked at in twenty years, I just can't consider parting with any of it. That doesn't apply to the books on my stall, so get your A into G. Haere ra, Andrew.

It looks like Ranginui is smiling upon us as a fine day is forecast. Come on down to the market, I've lots of new books on the stall this week, more cigar boxes and other bits and pieces.
As an incentive to come out, the first person to say the following will be able to pick two free art auction catalogues of his/her choice:
"If it weren't for your gumboots where would ya be?
You'd be in the hospital or infirmary.
Coz you would have a dose of the flu or even pleurisy
If you didn't have yer feet in yer gumboots.
This is, of course, taken from the great Fred Dagg's The Gumboot Song. Here's a link for you. Don't say I don't try to show you some of the best Kiwi culture available. Haere ra, Andrew.
P.S. All mention of the 1st Test will be treated with disdain, unless you say how lucky it is that England have a New Zealander playing for them.

It looks like being a nice day and England have the prospect of toiling away in the field for three sessions as the mighty New Zealanders march on. Two tests is not enough. Lots of new books on the stall this week and more of the usual cigar boxes including some nice Cohiba ones.
As an incentive to come out, the first person to say the following will be able to pick two free art auction catalogues of his/her choice:
"A pal's last need is a thing to heed. and
A promise made is a debt unpaid.

At least I hope it is. I can't remember if I'm paid up for the stall today. I'll just have to fly by the seat of my pants. If I'm wrong I'll update this post.
This week, I've yet more Impressionist and Contemporary Art catalogues as well as others, and more cigar boxes.
As an incentive, the first person to say the following will be able to pick two free art auction catalogues of his/her choice:
"A man had ought to consider his mates in the way he goes and dies."
This is a line from The Ballad of Blasphemous Bill by Robert Service. You might also like The Cremation of Sam McGee and The Shooting of Dan McGrew as well as others of his.

Fingers crossed the showers forecasted for today will miss us. I've loads of new catalogues including the three parts to next week's Sotheby's New York Contemporary Art sale. There's a Rothko with a forty to sixty million dollar estimate and a Lichtenstein that is expected to make more. I've lots more so don't be shy, come on down.
As an incentive, the first person to say the following will be able to pick two free catalogues of his/her choice:
"I aint got no patience for this type of foolishness."
I have to admit that South Beach Tow is a guilty pleasure (channel 68 on Freeview). I'm sure Bernice could sort out the Middle East inside a month if Obama sent her over.
Don't forget that if you you bring a black labrador to the stall you'll get a free book also. What are you waiting for? Andrew.

Well, there will probably be a band of rain curtailing the day in the afternoon so it would be best to get to the stall early. Lots of new stuff including contemporary art, impressionist art, asian art, design, and photography. You wont be disappointed and all very cheap.
As an incentive, the first person to say the following will be able to pick two art auction catalogues for free of his/her choice:
“Ethical behaviour is doing the right thing when no one else is watching - even when doing the wrong thing is legal.”
Aldo Leopold was a giant among men. If you get a chance to read A Sand County Almanac you may just see the world a bit differently. See you soon, Andrew.

Bookstall is on today April 25th
Looks like being a dry day again so come on down as I've loads of new books on the stall, particularly Impressionist catalogues. I've acquired a large number so if you're after works by Picasso, Monet, Pissarro et al, then I'm your man. I should have a clothes rail up so as well as t-shirts and sweatshirts I've got coats including Barbour and Pierre Cardin. Bargains galore.
As an incentive, the first person to say the following will be able to pick two art auction catalogues of his/her choice:
"...We are all possessed of a youthful pride
When the staunchest of mates move close at hand
For we have fought and ridden beside
The galloping 'Men of Maoriland'. "
These line come from a poem by 'Gerardy', an Australian Light Horseman, entitled "The Men of Maoriland". Today marks the 100th anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli, ANZAC Day being the day we commemorate the service of our armed forces. Apart from images pulled from newspaper sources I can't find it on the web so I plan to type it out so that people can find it easier. I'll show it as it appeared in the Kia-Ora Coo-ee. People tend to forget that after the pullout from Gallipoli the war continued in Palestine and Sinai for the duration of the war.
See you soon, Andrew.

Looks like it's going to be a fine day so come on down to the stall for more cheap books on art, and cigar boxes a-plenty. I've bought a decent clothes rail so have a look at the Sinstar t-shirts, vests, shorts and sweatshirts. Once they're gone they're gone.
This week's comp. The first person to say the following will be able to pick two art auction catalogues of his/her choice for free:
"Have you seen that Breaking Bad is showing on Spike (channel 31 on Freeview) at 11pm weeknights?"
It started Wednesday and you can catch up on Channel 5's on demand service if you miss an episode. Come to the market, then, when you're at the pub waiting for for the mighty Gunners to play you can appear to be cultured looking at your newly acquired art books. See you soon, Andrew.

There might be a shower this morning, but the afternoon looks like being nice and sunny. Lots of new books to the stall, all very cheap. Take advantage of the free book box and have a look at the cigar boxes this week - there are some nice Cohiba boxes that I want gone. Be early or you'll miss out.

It's safe to assume I'm a dog person. See you soon, you wont be disappointed - well, in the books anyway. Haere ra, Andrew.
P.S. Don't mention the cricket, Richie Benaud excepted.

Bookstall is on today March 28th
There might be a bit of rain around lunchtime, so wear a coat to the market today. Lots of new stuff including a batch of Phillips de Pury catalogues covering Contemporary Art, Design, and Photography. I've got about 150 to bring to the stall over the coming weeks so exploit me. They're all only two quid each - bargain.
As an incentive, the first person who says the following sentence will be able to pick two catalogues of his/her choice for free. This week it's David Cameron's go-to phrase which he uses repeatedly, over and over again, until you've lost all sense of what he was trying to avoid saying:
"Blah blah blah, the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker, blah blah blah.
Repeatedly. One time, he managed to squeeze three trebles into the one sentence. Never mind trying to follow the individual point, the whole subject of the interview had passed from one's memory.
It's simple. I've more clothing including Sinstar t-shirts and sweatshirts. See you soon, Andrew.

Bookstall is on today March 21st
After yesterday's eclipse non-event, you can look forward to coming down to the bookstall for another varied selection of art books and catalogues. I'm also expanding the clothing on offer so be sure to have a look. Remember, you're in a market, it's not a race, take your time to find art that you like, not just art you're supposed to like.
As an incentive, the first person to repeat the following will be able to select two free art catalogues of his/her choice. There's also a bonus one if you can deliver it a la The Flying Lizards:
"The best things in life are free
But you can give them to the birds and bees
I want Monet
That's what I want. That's what I want. That's what I want."
You may have to google flying lizards money if you're not of a certain age. See you, Andrew.

Well, there's the threat of the odd shower but overall it should be a dry day, fingers crossed. Lots of new stuff on the stall and I've got clothing as well (I picked some clobber up at auction this week). More cigar boxes and the free box will be prominant so you don't even have to buy anything. Still, if you don't come down to the stall you'll miss out.
As an incentive, the first person to say the following will be entitled to pick two free art auction catalogues of his/her choice:
"People wearing Hollister t-shirts. I just don't get it. What are they trying to say?
If you can say it with a look of bemusement on your face all the better, you might get a bonus. It's not like the graphics are very good. Every time I see one it puts me in a bad mood. Dickheads.
See you at the market. Andrew.

Well it looks like Spring has sprung. The forecast is for a nice day so you've no excuses for not coming down to the stall. Lots of goodies to find new homes for, especially yours. More quality art books and catalogues, cigar boxes, and I've a few mens and womens jackets as well.
As an incentive, the firest person to repeat the following will be able to pick two free art catalogues of his/her choice:
"I can't believe it's forty years since Born to Run came out!"
You can also use this line to start a conversation with your dad! See you soon. Haere ra, Andrew.

Bookstall is on today Feb 21st
It's just no good. I've been doing a raindance all week so that I could play with my new Makita angle grinder today but, alas, all to no avail. I guess I'll have to do the stall instead. It's still a slow time of the year auctionwise, but I have some of the impressionist catalogues from the recent London sales and there will be stuff from my vast stock that you wont have seen before.
As an incentive, the first person to ask the following question will be able to choose two free auction catalogues:
"Do you think Terminator 2 is Zaha Hadid's favourite movie?"
The comps are never difficult are they? What are you waiting for? Andrew.
P.S. I hope you put money on the Kiwis to win the World Cup. There'll be a sign on the stall giving the result of the NZ vs England game to remind you of your mistake if you haven't.
P.P.S. The photo of Channing Tatum adorning the side of London buses advertising his film Foxcatcher. Am I the only person who thinks he looks like a Springbok meathead?

Bookstall is NOT on today Feb 14th
The weather looks like it's going to be okay, but I'm just feeling too tired to do the stall this week. I'll spend the day trying to sort my stuff out and I'll probably go and buy an angle grinder. There's also a scrapyard that I want to check out as well before the rugby. Hopefully I'll be recharged for next week. Andrew.
P.S. Remember, the smart money is on the New Zealanders in the cricket.

Well, It's been cold all week so I guess I have no excuse but to sit around in the cold for another day. I hope you appreciate me. Lots of the usual again.
As an incentive to drag yourself out, the first person to say the following will be able to choose two art catalogues of his/her choice free:
"If we sit here and drink some more beer,
we'll be two inflatable dolls in a hooker's bad dream."
It's a line from Gary's Song by Mark Eitzel, lead singer with American Music Club that came out on Songs of Love in 1991.
It's easy isn' it? Andrew.

Well, it looks like it might be another fine day, fingers crossed. Lots of stuff to go on the stall this week and there are always deals to be done as I'm keen to shift merchandise. There are more wine and cigar boxes as well, you know the score. You wont know what's in the books unless you open them.
As an incentive, the first person to say the following will be able to choose two free art catalogues of his/her choice:
"Every day is a schoolday."
It was a line I heard on River Cottage Australia (8pm on More 4 on Sunday) and what better way to learn something new than to grab a catalogue or two from the stall. You don't even have to buy anything as there is a free box there to plunder. What are you waiting for?
andrew.

Well, the forecast shows sunshine throughout the day today - so be prepared for snow. Lots of new stuff this week and I will try to get there early.
As an incentive to drag yourself out the first person to say the names of the Banana Splits as said in the Banana Splits song, ie:
"Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork"
will be able to choose two free art catalogues of his/her choice. Come on, it couldn't be simpler. See you soon, Andrew.

Happy New Year everyone! Time to get back into the swing of things as I've got so much stuff to sell on the stall. Auctionwise, there isn't much on at the moment apart from next week's annual Ski Sale at Christie's South Kensington which has lots of posters in it.
I've loads of cigar boxes and I'll have some nice wine boxes as well. I got around 40 a couple of weeks ago so I'm keen to offload them.
As an incentive, the first person to say the following will get two free catalogues of his/her choice:
"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation."
It's a quote from Henry David Thoreau's Walden which ought to be on everyone's bookshelf. Come on down or you wont know what you're missing. Andrew.

Bookstall is NOT on today 20th Dec BUT...
Look, you shouldn't rely on me doing what I say I will when I say I will. Hopefully I can drag myself down to the market this week after last week's no-show. It's nearer Saturnalia after all. Everything in last week's post applies again. Feel free to chastise me for my unreliability. If you can't make it down, see you all in January. Andrew.
Friday, 12 December 2014
Bookstall is NOT on today Dec 13th BUT...
All is not lost. Although I'm not doing the stall today (the competition for stalls is too fierce at this time of year and, let's face it, my books aren't really Christmassy) I'll still be around using the market's wifi.
The free box will be stocked with fresh stuff as I want to have a bit of a clear out. Lots to offload, so come on down, I'm here to be exploited! Andrew.

Bookstall is on today Dec 6th
Well, the forecast looks to be the best we've had in weeks. There's no excuse not to come down to the stall and stock up on some reading material for over the Christmas period. Make a New Year's resolution to get some drawing pencils and have a go yourself. You've got to be better than Tracey Emin.
This may be the last time I do the stall this year as spaces are at a premium for the next couple of weeks. We are back on January 10th. As an incentive to drag yourself away from Wheeler Dealers on Quest TV, EVERYONE who comes down to the stall and says the following will get one or two free catalogues:
"Oi, where's my Christmas treat?"
I expect to see you all. Andrew.
P.S. If you go to www.questtv.co.uk you can watch the shows On Demand.

Well, after last week's non-start it looks as though we are in for a fine day. You'll be able to see the new stuff from last week plus some other goodies as well.
As an incentive, the first person to repeat the following Spike Milligan verse will be able to pick two free catalogues of his/her choice.
"The one-L lama he's a priest,
The two-L llama he's a beast,
But I will bet a silk pyjama
There isn't any three-L lllama"
The punctuation may be wrong but then I haven't seen it written down in over thirty years. Another easy comp. See you soon, don't miss out, Andrew.

Bookstall is on today Nov 22nd
Ever the optimist I'm hopeful that the rain will hold off and that the BBC forecast is wrong again. There are catalogues for forthcoming sales including contemporary art, design and Old Masters. Something for everyone. I have some die-cast metal figurines and yet more cigar boxes.
As an incentive to come down to the market the first person who asks the following question can choose two free auction catalogues:
"Do Scousers suffer from Irritable Vowel Syndrome?"
Dead easy. See you soon, Andrew

Bookstall is on today Nov 15th
I thought the weather was going to be a bit iffy, but we might just get away with it. More new catalogues including the two Warhols from this week's sale in New York - see what US$150 million buys you. The two catalogues come in a nice slipcase as well. I've a load more cigar boxes including a couple of nice Cohiba ones.
As an incentive to come down to the stall, the first person to repeat the following will be able to pick two catalogues for free of his/her choice (but not the two mentioned above):
"The All Blacks are such a great side, I think they'll win the World Cup"
It can't be simpler. Come on down, don't miss out! Andrew

Bookstall is NOT on today Nov 8th
No room at the inn this week. I tried to book on Tuesday but all available pitches were taken. Never mind, the weather forecast has changed every day this week - at the moment there looks like rain in the morning and afternoon. I'll be able to go to the pub to watch the mighty All Blacks defeat the English upstarts (this post may be edited later).
I may put in an appearance at some point before the rugby to sort a couple of things out. I'll be putting up posts soon about an upcoming moa skeleton and a Maori Wars medal to the son of the founder of Harrod's. Until next time, Andrew.

Actually, I didn't go away I'm just lazy. I've bought myself an iPad Air so hopefully I'll do more on here.

Bookstall is NOT on today 1st February
I know the sun is shining and I should be doing the stall, but this week has taken too much out of me on the bike. Hopefully I'll be back next week when things have had a chance to dry out.

This is the dawning of a new era
I could go on about how useless I am, but you've heard it all before on more than one occasion, so I wont bother. Let's see if I can do better.
Everyone likes things for free, I'm certainly no exception. The chaps over at Fingertips Music (here) search out free and legal .mp3s and make them available to the likes of you and me. Here's a link to Phosphorescent's The Mermaid Parade from 2010.

It is, of course, a reference to this. See you soon, Andrew
Parakeet update: I've seen a mob of about twenty parakeets three times this week as I've been cycling home. They fly over Oliver Road in Leyton, just along from Orient's ground around eight o'clock.

Looks like it
will be a beautiful day, so come to the park and buy books on art. I've
lots of new stuff, all going very cheaply. Lots of cigar boxes, some
wine boxes and other bits and pieces. There's even the free book box
there to help yourself to.
As an incentive, the first person who can tell me if he/she has seen a parakeet in Hackney will get two auction catalogues free. If you haven't, well, that counts too. There's one that flies over the market, and I even saw four in St James's Park a couple of weeks ago.
Come on, there are lots of other stalls as well, we've even got a tropical bar for the summer. See you soon. Andrew.

Tribal Art sale at Woolley & Wallis 3rd July
Woolley & Wallis, the Salisbury-based auctioneers, are holding a Tribal Art sale on July 3rd. Approximately 520 lots are going under the hammer, mainly from Africa but also including Maori, Aborigine, Pacific Islands, New Guinea, North & South America and South-East Asian items. Ninety-five percent of the lots are estimated at below £500, so there's something for everyone.
You can view the catalogue here starting at lot 654

Well, I think seven months off after that result in December is long enough. Let's get this thing rolling again. I'm going to be adding things on here that I've collected - mainly pre-1950 New Zealand sports memorabilia - though the days of spending £600 on an item are long gone. I've been reduced to picking up bits and pieces on eBay but c'est la vie. On with the show. Andrew.

Bookstall is on today, Dec 1st
Well, so much for getting this thing on the go again! Hopefully I'll get my A into G and start doing things again. There's been lots of things I should've posted about, but I've just been useless. I'll try to cover some of them after the fact.
Anyway, for the first time in about six weeks I'll be doing the stall today. The weather has just been lousy each Saturday previously. Consequently I've built up a lot of stuff and I'm drowning in it, so I'm keen to get rid of lots of books. There are a number of wine boxes and dozens of cigar boxes. Christmas is coming so come on down to the Market to find a stocking filler.
As an incentive, the first person to repeat the following phrase will get a couple of catalogues for free.
"Kevin Pietersen is a show pony with bad technique."
An easy one to remember, I'm sure you say the same thing all the time. Andrew.
P.S. Hopefully I'll get home to see highlights of the mighty All Blacks smashing the English.

I'm back. Looks like being a good day. Lots of new stuff including books on graffiti art in San Fran, L.A., Mexico & Japan. Lots of cigar boxes (but no wine boxes this week) and a few other things including a quantity of Jazz CDs. There are a load of new books in the free box as well. Come on down.
As an incentive, the first person to repeat the following phrase will get 2 catalogues free.
"I'd rather have a free bottle in front of me than a pre-frontal lobotomy."
Come to the park, buy books on art. Andrew.

Bookstall is on today Aug 4th
The sky is cloudy but hopefully I can dodge the showers when I'm pushing the trolley. I've a load of new items this week including a set of Picasso-themed dominoes but only a couple of small wine boxes that wont last long so be
quick.
As an incentive, the first person to repeat the following phrase will be entitled to choose 2 free catalogues off the stall:
"Tweeters have smaller brains."
Am I the only person who is completely fed up with hearing inane tweets on every BBC news programme? Nothing of any importance is ever said. It makes ya wanna go postal. Andrew.

Bookstall is on today July 28th
I may be running a bit late as I was watching the Opening Ceremony last night and am a bit behind getting ready. The sky is cloudy but I don't think any rain is forecast. I've many new things this week and also 7 wine boxes (3 large, 4 small) but they wont last long so be quick.
As an incentive, the first person to repeat the following phrase will be entitled to choose 2 free catalogues off the stall:
"You're absolutely right, Paul McCartney can't sing."

2012 Olympic logo - Antipodean designer?
Last year there was a threat of an Iranian boycott of the Olympic Games due to the choice of the Olympic logo, in that if you rotated and re-arranged the numbers it would be possible to spell 'ZION'. This is quite plainly ridiculous.
No, it is perfectly obvious that the designer at Wolf Olins was from, or had a close affinity to, the Antipodes. Either that or the Games organisers sought to harness a little of our sporting prowess to empower the athletes from Great Britain and other nations. What other reason could there be for stylised maps of both New Zealand and Australia appearing on the logo?
Completely evident isn't it! Now, whenever you look the Olympic logo you will not be able to see anything other than little old Enzed and that other island.
