Tribal Art sale at Woolley & Wallis 3rd July

   Woolley & Wallis, the Salisbury-based auctioneers, are holding a Tribal Art sale on July 3rd. Approximately 520 lots are going under the hammer, mainly from Africa but also including Maori, Aborigine, Pacific Islands, New Guinea, North & South America and South-East Asian items. Ninety-five percent of the lots are estimated at below £500, so there's something for everyone.

Well, so much for getting this thing on the go again! Hopefully I'll get my A into G and start doing things again. There's been lots of things I should've posted about, but I've just been useless. I'll try to cover some of them after the fact.

   Anyway, for the first time in about six weeks I'll be doing the stall today. The weather has just been lousy each Saturday previously. Consequently I've built up a lot of stuff and I'm drowning in it, so I'm keen to get rid of lots of books. There are a number of wine boxes and dozens of cigar boxes. Christmas is coming so come on down to the Market to find a stocking filler.

2012 Olympic logo - Antipodean designer?

   Last year there was a threat of an Iranian boycott of the Olympic Games due to the choice of the Olympic logo, in that if you rotated and re-arranged the numbers it would be possible to spell 'ZION'. This is quite plainly ridiculous.

   No, it is perfectly obvious that the designer at Wolf Olins was from, or had a close affinity to, the Antipodes. Either that or the Games organisers sought to harness a little of our sporting prowess to empower the athletes from Great Britain and other nations. What other reason could there be for stylised maps of both New Zealand and Australia appearing on the logo?

Maori whaleone club at Tennants, Leyburn, |N. Yorks, June 22nd

   There is a Maori whalebone club coming up for sale at Tennants Auctions, in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, on Friday, June 22nd as part of its Militaria & Ethnographica sale.

   'A 19th Century Maori Whalebone Wahiaka (Hand Club), with fine aged patina, of curved form, the handle pierced through for attachment and terminating with the head of a mythological figure with inlaid red sealing wax eyes, the tapered blade pierced along one edge, the opposing edge carved in relief with a Tiki figure with abalone shell eyes inlaid with red sealing wax, overall length 31.5cm.'

   Update:  The taiaha sold for £800 and the wahaika sold for a whopping £19,000 against an estimate of £2,000-3,000!

   Sotheby's in Paris is holding a sale of African and Oceanic Art on June 12th. Whilst the majority of the 137 lots on offer are from Africa (as you'd expect at a French sale) there are a few from the Pacific region including three Maori lots shown below. The estimates will make your eyes water, though.

   As mentioned elsewhere on this blog, I like the paintings of the Polish painter Adam Styka. There is an oil painting coming up at Aguttes Auctions in Paris on the 4th of April. Visitors to my site from the Middle East may be disappointed that there are no boobies on display, however there is a fine pair of asses instead!

Urban Art sale at Bonhams London March 29th

Bonhams on New Bond St, London, will offer 87 lots of Urban/Street Art on March 29th including 17 works by Banksy carrying estimates from £2,500-80,000.

   From the press release: 'Leopard and Barcode by Banksy was acquired directly from an exhibition entitled Existencilism at the 33⅓ Gallery, Los Angeles by the present owner and is the first time that the work has been seen at auction. Numbered 1/5, it has attracted a pre-sale estimate of £60,000 – 80,000.
  
   The sale features seventeen works by Banksy in total, with several outstanding originals. One of the highlights is Girl and Balloon, 2009 (estimate £15,000-25,000), where the artist has painted his iconic image directly onto the cardboard backing of an Ikea frame. Next to the Swedish company's label on the reverse he has added the word "quality."

   Highlights also include Bomb Hugger, 2002 (estimate £40,000-60,000) and Love is in the Air, 2002 (estimate £40,000-60,000), both acquired from the Existencilism exhibition in Los Angeles; and a screen print of British supermodel Kate Moss, 2005, which has been estimated at £30,000-50,000.

Sorry I haven't posted anything lately, my laptop has conked out and I'm in the process of getting another one. Lots of new books on the stall this week including catalogues from this month's Impressionist and Contemporary Art sales in London. I've lots of cigar boxes and a few wooden wine boxes as well. Also, though all the catalogues are £2.00 or less, there will be a 50p/free box for catalogues that I'm fed up of pushing home on my trolley. Maybe someone will actually pick up one of them and look inside.

Don't overlook foreign auction catalogues

   Foreign auction catalogues from Europe and the Far East are a good way to discover artists who have yet to establish themselves beyond their native shores. You may not be able to read the bulk of the text but there should be enough clues to allow you to do further research online. As an admirer of realist paintings, I'd like to show you four paintings from a recent sale of Chinese modern and contemporary art at Poly Auctions in Beijing. I will be putting quite a few of their catalogues online for sale shortly.

   There are digital watermarks (not my doing) on one or two of these images so be aware if you use them.

   First up is Man of Butuo by Luo Zhongli:

   Painted in 1988 and measuring 26"x21", it was estimated at £60,000-70,000. It sold for £108,000.

   Tibetan Girl by Ai Xuan, painted in 1993, 20"x24". Estimated at £82,000-123,000, sold for £106,000.

   Tibetan Men by Yu Hanxi, painted in 2011, 90½"x171¼". Estimated at £154,000-184,000, it sold for £224,000.

      Girl in Red Scarf by Yan Yaya, painted in 2006, 63"x59". Estimated at £22,500-26,000, it sold for £35,000.

   I could have added more, but this is only one catalogue and I've got loads. Keep an eye out for when I list them. When are you going to get an opportunity otherwise to pick up Beijing catalogues for a song?

   Well, it's Christmas, so whilst I've got a bit of free time (the market doesn't start again until Jan 7th) I thought I'd try something new. I plan to list a number of books on the blog that will be available to people who can't get out to East London to visit my stall.
